Trans Swap Auto to Manual

My son uses my 1987 245 wiht an automatic and wants to swap in a manual tranny. Which manual transmissions would be appropriate, and what is needed to perform the swap other than teh trans itself ? Any modifications to teh support crossmember, drive shaft etc ? Thaks.
