Well, what is your definition of noisy? Does it make a "ticky ticky" noise like the valves are loose, give me an idea here and maybe I can point you in the right direction. The heads on those cars are not really known for being noisy, the bottom ends can get a little psiton slap going in them, usually worst in the morning. On the cars that I have adjusted valves on that were loose I have never really noticed them to be louder in any way than engines that were in adjust. It is not like the old B20 pushrod motors that tick like a sewing maching anyhow and are even louder when the valve lash is off.
One thing you want to watch out for if you do have to get the head surfaced is how fine of a cut they put on it. Twice in my career as a Volvo tech I have seen heads that were surfaced and the finish was way too coarse and it would not seal up, causing a head gasket leak. Believe me when I say that it sucks big time. According to my machinist it is not only having a machine that has a slow enough feed rate but apparently you have to have a special machine to cut that stuff. So beware if you send it to your local "we machine everything shop" because 2 things are going to happen, 1) they will cut that head until it is flat, regardless of how much they take off and 2) they will cut it way too coarse. So now you have a head that is machined too far and too coarse and needs to be cut one more time on the correct machine to get a smooth surface. Do you think this head gets THICKER everytime you cut it?!?! They must because they just keep cutting. I think it is a hold over from the small block Chevy days when any poorly trained monkey could do your valve job.
The other thing, is your car a turbo or not. If it is a turbo the valves are stellite flashed and are not supposed to be ground, you have to replace them if necessary. Real nice huh?
