no dash lights and right turn signal, how do i find the short? 200 1989

i have a 89 240dl sedan. just got the brick back from the shop, all the hardware (flasher relay, turn signal switch) check out. they have it narrowed down to a wiring short somewhere, which really isn't narrowing it down. i don't want to shell out who knows how much more for however long it takes. i mean, looking for a short could take an hour or 5. i'm an amateur with car electrical problems. can anyone pass on some knowledge about where to start troubleshooting this, tools i might need, electrical basics, etc. thanks all in advance.
