Oil on top of engine 964 900 1993

While driving across the country I noticed that the engine smelled hot (let's say, in Oklahoma). A quick check of the dipstick and things seemed about 3/4 of a quart low. Filled up and drove on. Since my paranoia of being stranded in the middle of nowhere wouldn't stop nagging me, I check oil at every stop that I could let the engine cool down. Sometimes things were nice and full. Other times I had to add a 1/2 quart or so. I also by this time noticed that I was getting a bit of oil on the catalytic converter. I checked under the car and noticed a few drops there while stopped. I also spied small pools near the coils (with the sparkplug cover removed) and a bit at the base of the oil filler cap. A close inspection of the cap revealed that the inside and all sides of the gasket were dreched in oil. Anyone seen this? I believe that the only source is from on top, through the cap. Is this a sign of too much pressure? Any suggestions?
