Gauges, warning lights all dead? 200 1990

Hi,
I've got a 90 240 that is having some electrical problems. When I turn the key on, all warning lights and gauges except for the OD arrow and the clock are dead. Other systems like radio, fan, etc. seem to be functioning fine. The car starts and runs. Sometimes the alternator light comes on when it is running, sometimes not. The OD light turns off when I engage it with the button on the shifter. Once, clicking the OD switch seemed to make the alternator light come on. If the alternator light comes on, the speedometer may show a little life and jump around a little.
I'd appreciate some general direction on where to start looking. Likely culprits from the archives include bad circuit board, voltage regulator issues, a ground somewhere, etc. I couldn't find anything describing this exact situation so any help figuring out where to start would be great.
Thanks!
