Starter problem with 1988 Volvo 740 GLE with B230F engine 700

Hi,
I changed the ECU and my car is running somewhat decent.. Egine backfires between the shift chages .. it is like a puff sound... Do i need to adjust the mixture after changing the ecu. I installed a brand new FPR, RSR, FPR, Ignition module and it has a new dist. How cani get rid of the backfiring? And my other problem is my starter sounds like my battery is going dead.. I changed the battery today assuming my old 4 year battert is kinda shot after draining it and charging it 3 times to figure out my problem... But that didn't change anything. I checked the grounds and cables and everything is up to par...Is my starter going bad ?
Thank you for your help
Sammy
