lash when reversing.... rear main seal? 700 1990

my 90 740 has a moderate amount of lash when starting out in reverse. what could this be? can i fix it myself?
in additon, at about 129 kms my mechanic advised replacing the rear main seal within a few months. it's now at 136k kms 3-4 months later. are these two things related? have i left it too long? can i do the seal myself? what else should i do at the same time?

cheers in advance,
graeme reed

-bought car 8 mos ago w/ 128 kms.
-svc records show very regular tranny flushes.
