thermostat positioning 1982 244GLT 200 1982

in the middle of changing my thermostat last night I managed to confuse myself as to what part of the thermostat should be facing in (toward the head) and what should be facing out (toward the radiator hose) am I correct in that the part of the thermostat with the cross-support (NOT the side with the flat round piece of metal and the spring) should be facing out toward the radiator hose? and of course the bleed valve should be at the top.
