misfire and backfire 140-160 1972

My 1972 164 with D Jet has been running like a top until a few days ago when suddenly it started misfiring and backfiring. After a minuite or so of this it stopped and would not restart. The distributor has a Crane optical trigger in place of points and condensor. I pulled the entire distirutor and replaced it with another set up with traditional points/condensor. Problem solved.

The Crane unit has about 15K on it. A failure seems mighty strange. Could there be some fault in the distributor itself and really the Crane unit is fine. Where should I look in the distributor
