please help! weird charging issue still... 200 1986

So I have to drive to Ohio from Ontario on Sunday. My car works fine for the first 45min-1hour. then it starts overcharging intermittently. Every little while, the voltmeter will peg at over 16 volts, the lights get bright, etc. It will only stay that way for max 10 seconds, then goes back to normal, at least for a few seconds, sometimes up to ten minutes. I spent a bunch of time and cleaned all contacts, but to no avail. I changed the voltage regulator. At this point, I think it almost must be the alternator itself. What else could possibly cause the car to overcharge? thanks very much in advance,

Nate Gundy
