Cruise Control does not work - '95 964 900 1995

The cruise control worked "sometimes" for a few months; now it does not work at all.

Yes, the fuse is OK.

I do have the .pdf file of the 960 service manual (although I think it's for a '94, and I don't even know if it is the same for this car).It shows how to run a longer wire from the cruise unit to the diagnostic terminal.

Before I starting putting together jumper wires to try to pull off diagnostic codes for the cruise, are there any more accessible things I should start with, that might be more likely to be the problem ?
