Radiator Temp Sensor - Installation 700 1989

I'm trading the damaged rad out of my '90 and replacing with an '87 unit. the '90 has the temp sensor and the '87 has a plug where the sensor goes. It is a bugger getting the old sensor out! After reading the above I'm thinking it may be easier to get a new sensor and seal rather than trying to salvage the old sensor.
Do I need to use the sensor? Is it part of the a/c system? My a/c is u/s so if the sensor only controls the electric fan for the a/c then I don't really need it correct? Thanks
