Delayed shift from 2 to 3 - 945T 1991

My 740 did the same after the motor had been out & reinstalled. Backed off the kickdown cable about 3/8" and now shifts properly. I actually had to cut the crimp fitting off the cable to allow it to retract further. I think the housing got stretched or pulled out of the ferrule at the transmission - lengthening the housing so effectively shortening the cable. Another possibility is the cable's starting to fray or bind, not allowing it to move back. Check to be sure it's retracting without slack, when you operate the throttle by hand. If it's sticking partway the transmission will behave as though you're accelerating heavily all the time - high, hard shifts.
