Heat isn't the answer.

A BIG gnarly puller is. Something that would generally be more suited for working on semis.

This is probably the single most frustrating task to do on an old Volvo. And to top it off the tapered axle is a weak point as well - known to break off when used hard.

The tip about finding such a tool for rent at a parts store is a good one. They cost $100+ new, and you just don't need them very often. I bought one used on eBay about 4 years ago for $60 and have only used it once since then. Just rent one for $20.
