Greetings,
Thanks to everyone who offered me suggestions in my previous post. I appreciate it greatly.
To recap, my 1995 965 was reeking of raw gas fumes. It is/was an intermittent problem. I only noticed this on very hot days running the AC doing alot of stop and go. The gas fumes came through the AC vents when set to fresh air. Setting to recirculate stop more fumes from intruding into the cabin. My nose led me to search under the hood. I could detect no leaking fuel from the fuel rail, or anywhere else. But the raw fuel smell was very strong.
Fellow Brickboarders offered me alot of great suggestions, so this evening I tried to trace the origin of the gas fumes. Starting the engine cold produced no detectable fumes (using my nose) and no visually detectable leaks. But I did notice a hiss coming from a vacuum line. The other day when I was looking for the source of the fumes it was over 100 degrees outside and the electric fan was constantly running, drowning out the hiss of this leaking vacuum line.
I examined the fuel lines from the tank to the fuel rail and could detect no signs of leakage with the car on ramps and running at operating temp. I examined the Neck of the fuel filler tube, by removing the interior panels to reveal that a 95 965 wagon has a straight steel neck all the way up to the gas cap. No rubber to crack and leak.
Retracing all the fuel lines I eventually noticed that this vacuum line joins up with another vacuum line coming off of the return(?) fuel line. It then connects to what I believe is my flame trap.
I pulled the leaking connecting hose and it stinks of gas and oil. Could this leaking connector be the source of strong raw gas fumes? The crack and hole in the spent rubber connector is fairly substantial. I posted a picture of it in the "Technical" section of the gallery.
I hope this is the problem, because if it is the problem, it's a cheap fix, and I already fixed it.
Thanks in advance for any insights,
kkoch
