Headlight relay is warm 200 1988

I don't know how hot it should get under use of headlights, but I wonder if mine is overheating somehow. I have a 1988 244 DL and I lost the headlight last week. I found that the relay plug had melted. I think that it started at the green and red wire. I found a replacement relay and pluged and put everthing back togeather. I drove the car today and found that the relay was warm to the touch and almost too hot to hold. Is this normal under use? I had been running the headlights. If I have a problem, where should I start to look. Thanks for any information and happy bricking.
