GOT SOME PLAY IN MY STEERING RACK 700 1986

I just failed my technical inspection to homologate my cherised Volvo in France. The car has been going around Spain for 19 years and never failed. I get to France, pass the technical inspection and guess what, It failed!
It looks like there is some play in the steering rack. The guy of the inpection was able to turn right and left about half an inch the front wheels whith the car jaked up and the steering wheel won't move. The play does not come from the ball joints close to the wheel hubs. It looks like it comes from the rack itself.
I've gone to the volvo dealer here in france and repairing the car cost more than the price of my brick: more than a thousand euros!
Does anybody knows if there is a way of reparing this? Any suggestions?
Thanks,
