Fuel pump? 200

My 240 used to run fine with the fuel gauge needle waay below the red zone, but now it intermittently makes a straining, kinda creepy buzzing noise(pretty loud) from somewhere in the rear half of the car and shudders and bucks badly when I accelerate if the tank is under half full. It generally runs OK when up to speed but if I open the throttle a little to get up a hill it can lose power for a second or two.

It's generally fine when the tank's between 1/2 and full, although the 'furry buzz' can be heard in short bursts while idling sometimes.

Is this a fuel pump failing/failure? Something else, maybe? Is it OK to keep driving the car as long as it doesn't start cutting out completely?

...is this gonna be expensive?
