CD changer woes... 700 1990

I've got a Volvo CD changer in my '90 780 that's paired with a CR-814 head unit. All installed post-sale, the changer manufacture date was 1992 and the head unit is factory reman. The changer is in the habit of jamming regularly - as in every second disc change, and often switching it on, when it was functioning okay before turning off last time, it's jammed again, refusing to eject the disc even with popping out the magazine with a credit card, emptying all discs, reinserting and pressing eject. Then out it comes, off comes the cover and I manually turn the transport lift/lower wheels to free the disc. I know these units are somewhat problematic but this seems excessive. Any ideas, anyone? Is it perhaps just a maladjusted microswitch? I know the best solution is buy a decent changer and the adapter kit... or just ditch the Volvo stuff and go aftermarket but I'd rather preserve the originality to the extent that I can.
