Valve adjustment, catalytic converter 700 1986

1. How often have you had to adjust the valves on a B230FT? I've gone 141,000 miles and never adjusted anything, Mobil 1 10W-30. All other maintenance has been performed more often than required but I've never done the valves.
The car runs very smooth, gets decent mileage (25 mpg or so loaded to the hilt w/ a/c on @ 75mph).
Just seems strange that it never needed adjustment.

2. Is there any way to check the calalytic converter without removing it or having any special tools? I don't know that anything is wrong, but just wondered if there was a way to check if everything was right!

Thanks
