Brake failure light stays on; replaced what I thought was a bad caliper... Light is still on. Could collapsing brake lines be culprit? 200

I just was given this 5-speed 1987 245 and as my friend gave it to me he said "Oh yeah the brake light just started staying on!" So I started driving the car and the brake failure light does stay on. After a test drive I could smell some smoking fluid and it didn't smell like motor oil or trans oil and indeed after stopping and examining there was smoking fluid coming from out of the left front wheel area and it smelled like smoking brake fluid... So I repalced the caliper and pads even though the caliper looked fairly new and had no visible leaking fluid! However the brake failure light is still on!
It is on when starting the car without having even pressed the brake pedal. I have in the past had one that would come on only after pressing the brake pedal after each start-up.
I don't know if replacing the caliper did anything. The wheel still smells after driving it but I don't see the smoke that I did before having replaced it. The new smells could just be from the new pads and oils from the calipers?
The car stops well and doesn't seems to have any problems braking other than an occasional squeeling.
My wife needs to drive the car on monday as our inspection sticker on our other 240 expires at the end of the month, and I have to work on the front end on that and replace one of the windows!
Any guidance would be appreciated as always,
thanks in advance,
Kyle
