A new and disturbing thing...gearshift shakes badly in reverse 200 1989

I have an '89 240 that, unfortunately, has an automatic transmission. For the last couple days, I've noticed that the gearshift stick has been shaking badly and making noise when I am going in reverse.

I fear the worst over this..that the tranny is not long for this world. Please tell me some happier possibility.
