fuel pump 200 1985

So anyway, getting onto the highway and I hear a loud pop and the brick starts bucking. After a couple of hours checking out the wire harness and vacumm lines a good samaritan sugessted toppingoff the gas(3/4 full at that point). Put in 10 dollars worth and she started right up. My question is which pump is suspect? I do have power to the in tank but was wondering if the tank having to be topped of might require inspecting the in tank pump.
If it is the supply pump or other pump how do I minimize the impending gas leak when I change it out.
