noisy lifter, how serious? 900

My first volvo, an 89 245, died recently. My new volvo is an 93 940 turbo. The car is in great shape. I drove 200 miles across michigan to pick it up. It made the return trip with no problems. The one issue is a noisy lifter. It was making noise when I got it. The car was a dealer trade in so I do not know how long it has been this way. The noisy lifter is first on my list of things to repair. Over the next few months I will attend to the lifter, exhaust, brakes, etc. Is the lifter problem something I should see to right now? Will driving it this way for a month or so do any damage to the engine?
