rpm sensor = tachometer ? 700 1992

Hi all, 1992 740 wagon with Rex/Regina. Symptoms: somewhat difficult to start (intermittent); also intermittent stumble when decelerating quickly. Also a little sluggish off the line. Gas mileage not great (~17.5 mpg).

So - the other day I ran the OBD codes - nothing there - but I did notice one thing when the car was just sitting idling in park: the tachometer jumped around quite a bit at one point, but the actual RPMs didn't change.

My wife says she saw the tach bounce around on the road at one point. Does the tach get its info from the RPM sensor? Does that sound like a good next step to check?
