Exhaust pipe between cat. converter and front muffler? 200 1988

Quick question:

Working on my 1988 244. I've only had it for a few years, don't have a full history on it.

Exhaust system from front muffler back has several problems and needs replaced. I was trying to do the job without also doing the catalytic converter (no evidence of problems, and I'm a bit short on funds).

On the system on my car now, and who knows where it came from, there is a short pipe, perhaps around a foot, with a slight bend between the catalytic converter and the front muffler. (the pipe coming off the catalytic converter is also about a foot long, no bend) My local auto parts stores don't have this part listed anywhere, they have the cat. with a longer pipe and a bend going right to the front muffler.

Anyone else since this arrangment before? Is it perhaps just from a different year or after market manufacturer? I'd like to replace that pipe (its current rusted pretty solidly to the defunct front muffler) rather than doing the cat. converter.

Thanks,

Jon
