Ignition starter chatter, switch part? 200 1981

Is there a common problem with the electrical part of the ignition switch?

When the key is turned to start, I get an intermittant contact and severe chattering of the starter gear as it engages and releases rapidly. I'm sure it's shattering the teeth, so I don't drive it. If I need to move it, I start it by jumping the started contacts.

The starter connections are all good, and when I bypass the switch by jumping the starter contacts directly, no such chattering.

I replaced the electrical part of the switch with a boneyard switch and that lasted about a month.

The new switch is $53 and I want to be sure it's worth it.

Anyone else have this problem?

Mine is actually 1 74 145, but I've interchanged the part with many years of 240. The igntion lock parts are the same part numbers.
