Horrible squeal on 760 rear brakes.... cures? 700

Hi all,

I have a 1987 760 with a solid rear axle and ATE calipers.

I recently purchased a few items from vlvworld.com, and I was impressed at first, but now kind of frustrated..

First off, I bought two steering rack boots and tie rod ends, the boots BOTH failed (ripped) and they were installed no different than intended. Hmmm... So now I need to replace them with OEM boots and do an alignment again.

Ok, the second thing, I bought Dan Blok rear brake pads for my ATE calipers and Brembo rear rotors. I re-used the anti squeal shims (thin rubber/metal plate combination). This worked for a short while, but then the brakes would squeal quite badly after 500kms or so of normal driving.

I tried anti squeal compound between all the shims and pads, this helped, for a short while again, but then squealed (more like shrilled) even louder.

I removed the anti squeal shims and used compound, allowed the compound to cure and then re-installed the pads using anti-seize compound on the sliding surfaces between the pads and caliper bracket.

Fine, works a bit better, except in reverse, they squeal like mad... And now, they are starting to squeal again in a forward direction. This is quite frustrating. I think I might just rip the pads out and replace with Volvo original pads (which were in there before all this noise started).

The Dan Blocks have 10,000 kms on them now, so I "assume" they have more than bedded in by now. The Brembo rotors should be better than any 2nd line rotor as well. I've never had this issue before, but what's up with these pads??? I did the fronts as well, and they are quite quiet (on Brembo rotors I changed a few years back).

I expect the car to last me a couple more years, and I want it quiet.

The steering rack boots are also frustrating, but I don't want replacements from vlvworld. I hope the tie rod ends I bought from them last a while...

Any help on the brake issue would be greatly appreciated. (I used Permatex anti squeal compound BTW)

Thanks..

Myron
