What's the deal with racing tires?

I'm wondering why anyone would want to have racing tires on their car.

My teenager recently came home with a beater 1986 190E 2.3 Mercedes with racing tires. Revo to be exact.

The car drives like a flatbed truck and the tires seem to make steering much harder. Every bump in the road comes through.

So what's the general appeal to the racing tire? Just looks? Or is it that the flat tire keeps the car heading straight ahead during a race?
