What does a failed strut bearing sound like? 200 1985

The 500000 km wagoon is making a strange clunk that seems to be coming from the front driver's side. It is apparent upon turning left or right especially at slow speeds and also in reverse (while tuurning of course). The ball joints are newish (2 or 3 y.o.)as are the front bushings and the outer tie rod ends. I put it in the air and yarded on everything I could touch and the only slight movement was the inner tie rod ends. Do they fail in an obvious way? How does one test the strut bearing mount thingy?

Any info would be much appreciated.

Mike
