brakes vibrating and making noise 200

I am a new owner of volvo 240 DL and it has done 195 K so far.I have noticed couple of issues. One of the issues is while braking the vehicle vibrates a little .The brakes make sound To summarise the braking action is not smooth .
Brakes have a good bite. and vehicle stops in time but with a drama which is after making sound and trying to raise vibrations which do not shake vehicle .
Any reasons . If it is brake pads then how to see if pads are gone how thin is thin . Rotor seems ok to me smooth and shiny .
