960 air box thermostat S90-V90

I want to test my air box thermostat to see if it is operating but can't drive the car to see if the air box heats up. Will this work- Start the car and give it a while to warm up at idle, while engine is still running remove the air filter, push a dowel into the front(cold)inlet on the left of the 'Y' and feel for the flap being open or closed? Another question on the flap-does it move from cold to hot air, or only cut cold off or on, leaving the heater hose port open at all times?

Thanks,
David
