A/C Evaporator Mess 900 1993

I picked up a 940 sedan last year as an extra family car, primarily for my teenage son to drive -- sturdy, safe, 4-banger engine that won't tempt a young man to do any stoplight drag-racing (well, maybe once and then the embarrassment will keep him from ever trying again).

Last week I found that the a/c evaporator was leaking condensate back into the car -- the padding underneath the passenger side front and rear carpets were saturated and some sort of fungus was growing on the rear carpet. The previous owner had had the entire a/c system redone a few months before we bought it, and the gasket where the evaporator meets the firewall was not positioned correctly -- half of it sticking through the mounting hole and blocking the condensate outlet, causing it to back up and leak back inside the car. My wife had complained about the musty smell in the car since we bought it -- my son and I have hay fever and dust allergies so can't smell anything. I happened to put my hand down on the rear carpeting while unloading something and discovered the problem.

Anyway, after reviewing info on this board and spending some time tearing out padding and carpeting, I determined that this job was beyond my limited ability. The dealer did the job, but it was big bucks -- 8 hours of labor to replace a $14 part (the gasket). I cleaned everything I could reach with a bleach/water/detergent mix, replaced the saturated padding with some excess house carpet padding, and put everything back together (after drying the carpet).

Ah, well, live and learn.
