Sudden complete brake failure - Then everything is normal again.. 200 1991

If anyone can help explain this very strange behavior, I would be very grateful.
I have a 91 240 5-speed standard with 200k miles.

On two separate occasions, neither during particularly long trips or demanding driving conditions, I've parked the car to find that the brake pedal goes completely to the floor with almost no ability to apply the brakes. Both times, there was nothing wrong while driving, the brakes have always been solid. And then, after 20 mins-1/2 hr they go back to working perfectly. There seems to be no fluid leakage (the level stays fine in the reservoir), and there is a smell of burning brake material intermittently while driving.

I'm about to replace front calipers, pads and rotors, because it's about time to do this any way, but I don't know if this will fix this other and -scarier- problem.

Does anyone have any ideas?
