240 Dashboard- No Power when stereo removed

Last night my friend and I removed the old panassonic tape player from his volvo 240 to later be replaced with an alpine head unit.

This morning when he was driving to work he realized that his dashboard gauges (tach, speedometer etc.) are not working. We hadn't put the new alpine unit in yet so the wiring harness and everything are just lying there in the whole in the dash. We are wondering if anyone has had similar trouble with this or if anyone is farmiliar with the dashboard wiring of the car. Is it possible that we just pulled a wire out from behind the dash, or does a tape/CD player actually have to be hooked up for the gauges to work?!
