Hi,
I have a 1993 940 Volvo. (Non-turbo). The air conditioning works fine as long as you are going over 25 mph. And it really gets cold at highway speeds. But, if you slow down and are in rush-hour traffic, the air warms up considerly, and you can hear what sounds like the compressor turning off. But as soon as you speed back up, the air cools down. I've had two different Volvo shops look at it, they've vacumed it, they've recharged it multiple times, and even replaced some parts, but it still does the same thing. The last mechanic who really looked into finally said this is just they way it works. I guess Volvo could have used a less superior A/C parts in this model, but I still feel there is something else wrong. Someome suggested to check the condenser, which I did, but it seemed pretty clean, some small rocks, which I cleaned some out. Someone else mentioned something about checking the engine fan. The fan works, when the engine is hot, but it doesn't come on when the A/C is running. I think someone mentioned that it should run while the A/C is turned on, but I think someone else told me that wasn't the case. Any idea? Anyone with a similar issue? Is this just a low-end A/C unit?
One thing that was changed out way back was the circuit board behind steering column, the one with all the lights, and instruments attached. I didn't know if this things controlled the A/C or not.
Thank you,
Michael
