Buzzing in 4th gear - automatic, volvo 240 1991 200

Dear All,

There was another message asking about a buzzing noise, but the noise in my car seems to occur at a different time. Recently, I was driving back from work and after accelerating onto the highway and up to around 60mph, the car buzzed off-and-on. Everything would sound fine, then a buzz for a second or two, silence, buzz for another second, etc.... Basically, the buzz pulsated. Whenever the buzz-sound occurred, the car would feel like it would slow - kind of like a downshift, except only a tiny fraction of an actual downshift. The slowing and noise is barely noticeable, but it was enough to prompt me into checking the transmission fluid, which was very low. Filled all the fluids up, and the noise/slowing is still there.

It sounds like the noise is coming from the front, but it's not a very loud noise so it's hard for me to locate exactly where it is.

Is this something I should be worrying about? Is this a sign of a bad transmission? Something else? I am not a car expert by any means...

Thank you in advance for your help.

Cordially,
Katherine "Gavroche"
