Clutch cable... linkage??? 200 1985

I've an '85 240 GL wagon.
166+ K
4 spd/ elec OD
runs like a top.
I experienced a "new sensation" leaving a local parking lot an hour ago. The car would not shift into 2nd.... as a matter of fact ALL gears would grind unless I shut the motor off and place the gear lever into 1st. then upon starting the car would "lurch" forward and drive.... still NO 2nd gear... or 4th for that matter.. 3rd. was OK... I nursed the car home... (approx. 5 mi. and several stop lights) as I turned the corner toward my house I instictively downshifted into 2nd. gear and it went as it always does. Heartened by its miraculous recovery recovery I drove said same around for awhile... upshifting and downshifting... no problem. It's never done this before...
