Whirling sound from rear of car 200 1986

On my 86 240 NA, I have been having an increasingly loud on again off again whirling sound coming from somewhere in the rear. I have not been able to localize the sound to either rear wheel. The sound is quite pronunced at highway speeds and is not as high pitched like a belt squeal.During my 18 mile work drive the sound will exhibit itself approximately 75% of the time and is not necesarily consistent in sound frequency. The sound appears to be related to wheel speed and not engine speed.I am starting to believe it is not in the wheel bearings themselves but the differential. I placed on jack stands to run the car to try to locate the sound but the sound stopped again before I could isolate exact location. What are possibilities/probablities?
