960 thermostat saga continues... this is getting old. 900

After my second trip to NAPA I finally got the right thermostat for the 960. Note to any 960 owners buying thermostats. Ask for an 850 thermostat. Their catalogue is wrong. It lists the same thermostat for 240, 740, 940 and 960. It lists a different thermostat for 850s. Get the 850.

I digress. With the new thermostat the gauge reads exactly the same at 1/4 with the engine fully warmed up. On top of that, the old thermostat that came out didn't look broken. It was completely closed and all the tabs were intact. Can the temp sensor fail by giving a false readings? After driving the car, I poped the hood and stuck an electronic cooking thermometer in the radiator fins about 2 inches below the tor radiator hose in the first rubber flap. It read 149 degrees F. That sound about right to me but I don't know. Ambient temp was in the high 70s with mostly city driving. I think the second time I'll try to get a reading right now on the thermostat housing. The new thermostat is rated at 195 (91C) degrees. The old thermostat was 190 (87C).
Thanks for the help.
Justin
