erratic restart...240 DL '89

I have a 1989 240 DL sedan. I suspect I have some type of fuel delivery problem, but am unsure how to diagnose which component might be the trouble spot. Symptom: On warm days (and we really only notice this on warm days), the car will often fail to restart AFTER it's been driven for a bit. Seems to crank fine -- just doesn't seem to be getting the fuel it needs to get going. I have tried gently clobbering the fuel pump, which may or may not help: the car always eventually restarts, but I'm not sure if it's the fuel pump or something else. Could this be as simple as the fuel filter? How do I know if it's the pump vs. the accumulator? And how do I know which fuel pump (in-line or in-tank) might be the problem part. Thanks!
