Beloved 1986 240DL Chugging around HELP 200

Hi Folks,
This website is a salve to my Volvo lovin' heart....for no one understands another Volvo lover like another one....
My 1986 240DL station wagon has been chugging quite a bit when first started. It's not usually much a bother except when pulling out into oncoming traffic with my children in the car...I fear for my life. My Volvo hesitates and then I hear slight popping noises from the exhaust. Then...after a bit of coughing...my car will take off. I have tried higher octane gasoline with only a slight improvement.
I know I have a trans fluid leak somewhere but that's all the problems I've ever had this great car. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can try next?
Thanks, Jennifer
