oil pump failure symptoms 700 1991

Of late ive been hearing a "tingy", "tingy" sound on acceleration . Initially I thought it was pinging ( knocking) from the engine but I heard it also when in reverse and decelerating. If in neutral and revving the engine I do not hear the sound as loud whether stationary or moving .Invariably I have to be accelerating going forward or decelerate when reversing...also the noise is different when slowing while reversung..sounds more like a "crenk""crenk"..sound. There a slight hint of the noise when idling so I used a piece of garden hose and put it near the oil pan and listened and heard the noise loudest there. Could it be a failing oil pump? Any ideas anyone?
