PCV hose; '80 K-Jet 200

The PCV system on my '80 K-Jet has a hose between the flame trap and the air filter box. It seems to me that there should be a nipple on the box to accept the hose. But in this case the hose (which I need to replace) is just crammed through the hole. It's a tight fit and would seem to provide a good seal. But this seems very un-Volvo. I'm trying to remember what this was like on my '79 but I don't recall. Did they design it that way, hose directly into the box? Or should I add some sort of fitting for the hose?
