Need to replace head gasket; questions 200 1988

I haven't replaced a head gasket in 20 yrs, & it was on a much smaller car. How much does the head weigh? Do I need to rent an engine lift? How difficult? Do I always need to have the head machined? How much does that cost approx? I'm not sure I want to do this, the heater fan also needs replaced which seems like a lot of hassle, but the car runs fairly good for 172k, though the body & interior are just fair.
