How did you do it?

I did one or two ball joints on my old 86 (Sophie).
I unbolted the holder (4 bolts) and it came off.
At that point, the spring expanded, and I couldn't get it back on without compressing the spring.

How did you do it?
I sure could save that $150 every time.
