manual transmission removal 200 1986

I was about to remove the transmission to change the clutch, pressure plate, pilot and release bearings when I ran into a few problems. I removed the driveshaft, starter, clutch cable connection, and exhaust header bracket without issue. I could not for the life of me slide the pin out of the shifter lever after removing the setscrew. I didn't apply heat because I think there are plastic washers/seals in the mix. I tried both from inside the car and underneath to knock the pin out. I did not want to apply too much indirect force that could damage the linkage. Another issue is that I realized too late was my little jack stands gave me less than enough clearance to remove both my floor jack with transmission adapter and the tranmission from under the car. I thought maybe I could get 4 of those huge 12 ton jack stands and a height extension for my floor jack which only goes up 18". Given that I can't get the pin out when the tranny is attached the car, is it safe to remove the stick along with rest and then try to remove the pin with a better angle of attack? Also, any tricks on getting the transmission crossmember off? The fasteners are rusty and I gave up after fully realizing the clearance issue. I reassembled everything and will attempt this daunting task when more material and intelectual resources are available.

Thanks again for the help!
