Aftermarket stereo - stock speakers 'filters'? 200 1991

I just installed a new Kenwood mp3/CD player in my 240 wagon. I bought it at BestBuy - and they tried to sell me some sort of speaker filters. What they told me was that the aftermarket stereo was so much more powerful than the original old stereo/amp that it would inevitably blow the old speakers, no matter what volume you listened at without these gizmos. I wasn't sure if it was just a BestBuy ploy to get more money or if it is true.

Anyone know about these things and whether it's necessary? My untrained ears think the old speakers sound fine with the new stereo so I don't feel like having to pay for or install new ones if it's avoidable so I don't want to blow them unnecessarily.

:)
