Interesting electronic 5th gear story 200 1981

I bought a 1981 244 GLm (m for manual), which was advertised with 4 gears. This was because the last person did not have 5th (electric) gear working. Any way I tried to fix it to no avail (myself) tried putting in fluid, hoping it was a simple fluid level problem. After about 6 months continual usage (and many drops out of 5th gear) the 5th gear is now reliably staying in gear. My guess is that it was some crud in the solenoid. Wonderful! How many cars actually can improve with age?
