Banged on fuel tank 900

Here's a good one. The wife and I stopped to put gas in our 940 wagon. I noticed that the gas cap was loose when I took it off. The gas pump at the station wasn't working, so we decided to move to another one. At this point the car would only crank but not start. I man who noticed this came over and banged on our gas tank while I cranked the engine and the car started.

Could this be because we were low on gas and the cap was loose? There seemed to be no pressure release when I removed the cap. Or do we have a faulty fuel pump or relay? Thanks!
